The final Lay Rally of the Durham District will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Mt. Sylvan UMC. This event, which will begin at 3:00 pm, is for all clergy and lay persons in the district. We are delighted to have Emily Innes as our speaker. Emily is the Conference Lay Leader and the Head of the North Carolina Conference General Conference Delegation. She is an outstanding Lay Leader. Her leadership is being shared with the larger church as she is the Vice President of Women’s Division.

Come and celebrate with the District Board of Laity. We will celebrate the outstanding lay ministries of the district and present scholarships to two outstanding student pastors. The clergy of the district will provide special music. As this will be the last Lay Rally of the Durham District, we will have a roll call of churches. We want every church of the district represented.

Veterans today suffer from the highest rate of suicide in our nation’s history, have startlingly high rates of prescription drug and alcohol abuse, and are often thought of as “damaged goods.” Society must accept the responsibility of acknowledging and confronting the moral fragmentation that our service members suffer as a result of their experiences in war.

The Church and people of faith are especially called to address these issues concerning war and suffering. Clergy are faced with the challenge of ministering to parishoners who are considering going in the military, are currently serving in the military, are returning from military service, or the family members of people in those situations. While clergy are equipped well to minister in many difficult situations, many clergy members may struggle with how best to address the effects of the seen and unseen wounds of war in the lives of those to whom they minister.

A group of concerned students, clergy, and lay persons have gathered to organize Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, a conference on Veteran’s Day,

2011 to engage in a conversation on these important issues. The conversation is geared toward first, understanding these complex issues, second, coming to grips with how they affect our churches and communities and those persons who worship and live there, and third, to develop tools that clergy and others can use to minister more effectively to those struggling with the direct or indirect impact of war and violence in their lives. Above all the conference will be an opportunity to listen and learn from and about those who do violence in our name.

If you would like more information, including conference details and registration, please visit the website http://sites.duke.edu/aftertheyellowribbon/. Space is limited for this conference, so register as soon as you can to reserve your spot in this conversation.
